Common Conditions – Caused By Badly Applied Nail Enhancements

Some of the most common conditions a nail tech will come across are weak, damaged ridged split nails.  These can possibly be caused by badly applied nail enhancements. 
 
Bitten nails – 
If nails are severely bitten and have broken skin nails should not be applied.  Of however they are just short, nails can be applied but would need to be maintained more often and kept short at first whilst nails are growing. 
Regular manicures can help to keep surrounding skin soft and in good condition to prevent picking. 

Ridged nails – 
Can be in older people, or caused by matrix trauma , picking, eczema, illness or hereditary.  If nails have thick ridges they should not be buffed as the nail plate will become too thin.  If ridges are buffed out they can split.  Nails can be made to appear smoother by applying a natural nail overlay. 
 
Peeling, flaking nails – 
Can be due to household cleaning agents, or weather changes.  If too much water gets into the nail plate it can peel.  Also cam be caused by rough removal of enhancements.  Keep nails sealed and moisturised with cuticle oils. 
 
Thin brittle nails – 
People can have thin nails same as they have thin hair.  But can also be a result of dehydration so again oils and nail strengthener’s can help.
